On September 13th (after reading some of the reviews on this website) I contact A-1 about shipping my 2000 Porsche 996 C4. The CSR was courteous, answered all my questions, and said that she would call me back within a few days with a company and a pick up date. The price was set at $1095. I paid 200 to them, and paid the balance to the driver when he arrived.
She called back on the 15th with a carrier and a date- the first date in the "window" that I provided her. I opted for the enclosed carrier- and I am very glad I did. Enclosed carriers, I am told, are usually in better shape all around. Think about it: enclosed carriers often move high dollar vehicles that can't afford to get even a single chip in the paint; show & vintage cars usually have to be in place at a very specific time. The CSR also let slip that enclosed drivers are more reliable than open.
On SEP 21st I recieved a call from "Chad", the driver of the truck. He too, was courteous and interested in my car. He wanted to know if he could pick it up earlier; he was already up in Washington state, and was ready to head back down the coast. We agreed that he would pick the car up on the morning of the 23rd. He said he'd call in the AM once he was in the area, and we would arrange a meeting place, since I live on a narrow and twisty road. I was having it delivered to a fellow car enthusiast in San Diego and moving there at the same time.
On SEP 23rd Chad called and I arranged to drive to meet him on a larger neighborhood road than my own. He was very thorough, let me drive my car onto his rig, and made sure I was personally satisfied with the way it was secured. He even gave me a ride back home, or at least nearby. He stated that he would be able to deliver my car on Monday or Tuesday.
On Monday the 26th I called to check on his progress. He was ready to deliver the car on Wednesday afternoon, the 27th. I called my friend in San Diego and he was ready too. On Wednesday the truck rolled up, and my friend drove the car off the truck. No dings, no surprises. The whole process was a complete success. Chad works for BATS Motorsports (541)739-2211 and they only perform enclosed transportation.
WHAT I LEARNED FROM THIS EXPERIENCE: you get what you pay for. If you go with the cheapest possible carrier, you will get that kind of service. If you go with an open transporter, chances are good that your car will get something flung on it, or seriously delayed (drivers work for peanuts). I was prepared to pay a little more for enclosed transport, and it was well worth it.
