Firstly, I got my car delivered yesterday from Fremont CA to Minneapolis MN in good condition.
I was very much impressed by the honesty with which Larry dealt with me. He basically took time and explained me "how really trucking works". I also appreciated the fact that he was not at all intrusive and pushy. I had posted my car to be moved on some sites and I got several emails and ph calls. I called 3 or 4 of them based on their review ratings on this site to talk in person and got some quotes. Most of them wanted a deposit ranging between $150 - $250 and some included that price in their quote and some didn't.
Then I called Larry and his quote was very reasonable compared to others but what really got me going is the detailed explanation he gave me. NEVER pay any deposit upfront, companies do this to get you committed. All they do after you pay them the deposit is advertise your car on a national trucking board website (5 min work at most for $200). The actual truck drivers are constantly viewing this site and decide on which car to pick up based on -
1> Price advertised for the car. 2> Their current location and the distance they have to travel to pick up the car. 3> The destination, if its on their route or if they are willing to travel extra distance.
So the companies (or brokers) so to say can't really do much in terms of pickup and drop times/dates. All they can do is let you know when a driver is willing to pickup your car. If for example their quote is $700 and their commission (or brokerage fee/deposit amount) is say $200 then they are advertising your car for only $500 which might not seem much for a driver (depends on the distance). They could have instead taken $100 commission and given the driver $600 in which case the chances of your car getting picked on time increases considerably. Some companies resort to charging a lot more (upto $950 with some I called) so they can pay good amount to the driver and also keep a good amount as deposit and the end result is your car gets picked sooner but you'd have paid more.
So what you can do is go with someone like Larry who says upfront his commission is $100 and let you decide what amount you want to pay to the driver. In my case we quoted $660 and I waited for 2 or 3 days then I raised it to $700 and it got picked up the same day. If I was in no hurry I could have waited for longer without increasing the price or raised it even more if I was in a hurry to get it delivered. So basically you are in control of how much you want to pay and since you don't pay the brokerage fee (deposit) until your car is picked up, you are in no binding or commitment. I have heard horror stories of how some pay upfront, get committed and have your car sit in some garage until its picked up by some driver who is making that route and wouldn't mind a lesser price on the car. You can even read some on this review board. Its also important to keep it contact with the driver of the truck.
I just wanted to write my experience regarding the delivery and a few things I got to learn along the way. Keep in mind how this works and go with whoever is offering to deal this way. Good Luck:)
Cheers
