Like many people who have to ship their car for the first time, I was scared and did lots of online research. Finally, I got to this website and made a right choice based on the experience and lessons from others. Now, it's time for me to contribute in this forum. Here's the report.
1. First, I just googled several keywords like "car", "ship", etc. and submitted requests for quote. Then, I found this website by chance and immediately realized here is the place to start.
2. Asked for quote from all top 20 rated companies in the past 2 years. The quoted price varies from $850 to $1450. My hunch tells me anything below $1000 is not realistic given the current gas price.
3. I changed my strategy to start from the No.1 rated company, which is Angels Moving Autos. I'm willing to spend a bit more for a quality service. However, they changed the quoted price from about 1100 to more than 1300. So I tried No.2, which is Agape. The quoted price is 1150. I called to confirm, no change. Then, submitted my order. It's ten days before the scheduled pick up date.
4. In a few minutes, I got a call from Agape to check some information. Then, an email with a form for me to fax back the contract.
5. In two or three days, I got the call from a carrier to confirm the pick up date. I was concerned about the 5-7 day window, which means I may have to leave my car to my friend to handle if they can't make it in three days.
6. One day before the schedule, I got the call again from Jimmy, who is a local carrier. He asked me a time and I said if it's possible to deffer for two days since I got the impression that when he says a date, it will be exactly that date, much more than what I expected.
7. Exactly one day before the revised schedule, Jimmy called again to fix a time and I said 10:00am which is most convenient to my family. Am I too selfish? This kind of service usually costs at least $300 more.
8. Right on time, Jimmy showed up with his coworker. He said he owns a big truck and after collecting ten cars from North Carolina, he will drive them to Washington himself. I trust him at the first glance and made the full payment, which has to be in cash or cashier check. Agape accepts credit card.
9. Six days later, Jimmy called to schedule a pick up time, again any time that's most convenient to myself. I said 10:00am.
10. Next day at 10:00am Jimmy told he's at the place about one mile away where he can load my car off. I drove to the place and there's a couple there also picking up their son's car.
11. I can't believe my car was so clean like shipped in a closed case. Just some dirt looks like from rain. And that's all.
12. I'm very happy with Jimmy, the local carrier, and of course Agape, who chose such an excellent partner.
