Carrier Damaged My Car

I used AmeriFreight to help me transport my 1969 Pontiac GTO. The car restoration was just completed last summer and the vehicle has been in storage since August 2007. I was finally ready to have the vehicle shipped to me.

AmeriFreight set me up with Accurate Auto Carriers. The driver was early to arrive in Minnesota and had not been given completely accurate information on the pick-up schedule...but that was no big deal.

The car left MN a day early so I figured it would arrive a day early, too. That would have meant the car would arrive on Thursday. When I had not heard anything by Saturday, I called AmeriFreight and was directed to the driver (delayed in NJ).

The car arrived Sunday...damaged! Apparently, the car had somehow slipped out of the rack and slammed into the hydrolic unit inside the transport. This was something the driver failed to mention the night before when we talked.

So my freshly restored '69 GTO, which I have been waiting 8 months to drive regularly, has a smashed quarter panel. I am not too happy with that. Since AmeriFreight accepts no responsibility for damages to the vehicle (per the contract), and I had to pay the shipping in full (also per the contract), I will now have to deal with the carrier's insurance people to try to get this resolved. I wonder how motivated they will be to help since they have been paid already.

At the moment, I am wishing I had just driven the car back myself. Instead I paid extra to have an enclosed carrier, only to get my car to MD dirty and damaged. While I might use AmeriFreight again, I doubt I will use Accurate Auto Carriers in the future.

It is unfortunate that accidents do happen. We all hope it wont happen to us. AJ has all the reason to be upset and frustrated. But we cannot prevent accidents. All we can do is help you through the process. If we carried the insurance instead of the carrier, there would be no control if they are not held accountable for their services. The benefit here is that AJ has AmeriFreight as a broker to follow up and ensure that the service is provided as promised, including the repairs. Without a broker he would be at the mercy of a trucker and may have no recource.
