Because of the circumstances of the move, we had to have our vehicle picked up on specific day within a relatively short window. I was all set to use DAS because they can guarantee pick-up although getting a specific pick-up time is hard even for them. However, we finally chose America Auto Movers partially based on the positive reviews on this site and because they offered door-to-door service at a slightly lower price. I thought I was making a choice between two companies that own and *use* their own trucks to ship vehicles.
To their credit, they picked up the vehicle on time. Having said that, we did verify twice before the day of pickup to make sure the vehicle would be picked up, because we were flying out later that day. Also, there was a mix-up and they had to re-arrange the schedule on that day to get our car on time. To verify twice require numerous calls as Mike is horrible about returning phone calls.
Once we arrived in TX, we were first told that there was a multi-day delay because of weather in WA, then a customer in Colorado. Then we were told the truck had transmission problems. We were continually given the phone number of the flatbed driver in WA for status updates that picked up the truck, but this person was not driving the semi truck down to TX. This person was obviously upset, but not with us, he was upset with American.
We eventually learned (and not from American) that our truck was actually brokered to another company. I chose American because 'they own their own trucks' and in fact their report on safersys.org says their broker status is inactive. "We own our trucks" is on their hold music, which gets particularly grating when you are being lied to about why your truck is still not there after 12 days. We learned from the nice people that eventually delivered our truck that it didn't even leave WA for 9 days. We later asked friends and there hadn't been any inclement weather in WA during that time.
American Auto Movers will tell you anything to get your money, then if something goes wrong will alternately ignore you or lie to you. American never told us they brokered our truck. When we asked Mike about this, he said that dispatch should have told us that. While this is definitely true, the entire experience was terrible customer service.
The truck arrived very dirty, but not really harmed.
