I was very apprehensive about using an on-line auto transport service to move our car from New Mexico to California. However, the price offered ($625) was about half of what our moving company proposed to charge for moving the car with our household goods. I also worried about paying the deposit in advance of having the car shipped. This worry was alleviated by the promise to refund the deposit completely before shipment. Since the deposit was by credit card, I knew I had recourse if services were not performed. Most worrisome was the lack of guarantee of shipment and arrival dates. We were leaving town and wanted to have the car picked up before we left. To maximize the chances that the car would be picked up while we were still in New Mexico, I decided to schedule the pickup date to be one week before my departure date. Delivery was not really a problem as we had someone in California to receive the car.
So I tried it, and the results were better than I could have imagined! I first called the toll-free number to talk to a “real” person. She assured me that the terms were as stated on the web-site. In addition she carefully explained how the pick-up and delivery dates were determined. I then signed up on the web-site, an extremely easy process. I received an email the first day that the car was available for shipping, giving me the carrier’s name and cell phone. Because the arrival point was near the recent California fires, I called the carrier to see what his plans were. The carrier gave me the driver’s name and cell phone number. I called him and he was happy to pick up the car that evening or the next morning, whatever was best for me. We met that evening at a local shopping center, our street is impassible to large trucks. The transfer took about 10 minutes. He planned to have the car in California in two days. I cautioned him about the fires and he said he would be in contact. He called our contact in California three days later and arranged to drop off the car the next day at their house rather than at the original drop-off point, since that was more convenient for them. The car arrived in exactly the same condition as shipped. I couldn’t have imagined a smoother transport!
