I had a mercedes soft-top convertible shipped from Fla to CT in May by M and A trucking. I was present when the car was picked in Florida up but was not yet in CT when it was delivered (at 11 PM). My neighbor took delivery of the car and paid the driver. The car was put immediately into my garage. It looked fine to my neighbor who inspected it for dents. Since it was dark, he did not notice scratches along the top of the car that ran from back to front. When I returned to CT and pulled the car outside to the sun, I noticed rust colored scratches and also that the seam above the back window had been snagged and pulled apart. To make a long story short, the top was not reparable as the seam had been heat-sealed at the factory and could not be repaired. I was told by the broker, United CAR Transport, that all their carriers had up to $100,000 insurance for damage. I contacted the carrier who requested pictures of the damage. I e-mailed the pictures and a written estimate and that's the last I heard from them. United Car Transport gave me M and A's insurance co, COMMERCE INSURANCE of Mass. They sent out an appraiser who provided the correct appraisal but a week later I received a letter from COMMERCE saying that M and A did not have the right coverage for this claim. The cost to replace the top was $6900. I had to make a claim to my own insurance company. The damage was caused when the car was removed from the lower level of the carrier when the top level was too low. Three differenct convertible top companies in CT told me the same thing. They all recognized what caused the damage. It was needless. I would not recommend this company to anyone. What good is insurance if it does not cover damage to a car that's transported?
