I used a broker which contracted Buya Transporation, of Alameda, CA to transport my car from Walnut Creek, CA to St. Louis, MO. I had taken pictures of the vehicle prior to the car being picked up. When the car arrived the following week at night, it was very dirty. I checked the car, however, I did not inspect the roof. The next morning, I noticed scratches on the back windshield and the roof. The estimate to fix the damage was almost $1,400.00. In addition when I picked up the car, I noticed that the car had less gas in it when it was placed on the carrier. I checked the mileage. The car was driven over 70 miles. A soda can and an empty cigarette pack were left in the car. The driver, Tony, stated the car was driven only to the lot.
I filed a claim with Buya Transporation's insurance carrier, which denied the claim because I had signed the bill of lading which showed there was no damage when it was picked up (it didn't note there were scratches on the roof prior to when the car was picked up). .
The broker and the insurance company were very good to deal with. Buya Transportation refused to cooperate with the insurance company. If you contract with a broker, REQUEST BUYA TRANSPORTATION NOT TRANSPORT YOUR VEHICLE.
LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES. Here is what you should do:
1) Take dated pictures of every inch of the car.
2) Write down the mileage of the vehicle prior to departure and after the arrival. Note the position of the fuel gauge.
3) Take video of the car being taken off the ramp (instead of putting a block of wood to raise the end of the skid, Tony didn't do anything and scraped the bottom of the car as he was unloading it).
4) If the car is dirty, thoroughly wash it prior to inspection and signing the paperwork.
5) Take note of any identification on the transport carrier.
