After asking a neighbor what was the best way to ship a vehicle to California, we found Safe-Direct Car Shipping online and liked what we saw there, so we filled in their form. Almost right away Chris telephoned us and explained to us how they do it. His website also includes videotaped questions and answers about the process. Chris explained that he would be contracting the delivery to an independent trucking company, which would pick up the Dodge Forester here in Pennsylvania, carry it to California; and drop it off at, or very near to, the address we provided. Along the way, they would be picking up and delivering other vehicles, so it would be a matter of a week to ten days from pickup until the day the vehicle is delivered to the San Diego area. There would be no upfront charges, but a down payment (we sent it online, by credit card) was due once the pickup had been scheduled and Chris e-mailed us to tell us. Stolpner Trucking contracted to handle the job. We called Stolpner which is out in the New York City area, and were given a date and time to expect the open car carrier to arrive here in Central Pennsylvania. Archie, who was the driver, called back and estimated it would be late in an evening; he called again to say that as it was getting dark, he would be there around 9 a.m. the following morning. Archie called the next morning to say he had parked two blocks away in front of a commercial car repair shop right down the street. I drove the Forester to him and chatted with him as he inspected it and marked his checklist. He was pleasant, friendly and personable. His estimate for the date of delivery turned out to be quite close. Everything went just fine. The fee of $1,450 was paid COD (upon delivery). I would recommend this service to anyone in a similar situation.
